Harvest continues in Tuz Gölü, which meets 60 percent of Turkey’s salt needs.
Most of the 1.5 million tons of salt obtained during the season was utilized domestically.
Some of them are exported to more than 60 countries.
Salt production has been carried out from the beginning of the 1800s to the present day in Tuz Gölü, which is located in the closed basin in the middle of Ankara, Konya and Aksaray, and is estimated to have approximately 250 million tons of salt reserves with its rich mineral structure.
In the lake, production is carried out in an area of 18 square kilometers in 5 pools.
Salt formation begins with the withdrawal of water in the production pools.
The salt collected by salt cutting machines is transferred to trucks and sent to the collection area and the factory for processing.
Ömer Çetiner, General Manager of Koyuncu Salt Operations in Tuz Gölü, explained that the production of raw materials and salt in the lake is carried out in 3-3.5 months in summer, and said, “We obtain approximately 1.5 million tons of salt during this period. We turn the majority of the product we obtain into places where it is needed in the market as raw material, and approximately 400 thousand tons of it into finished products with higher added value in our factory.”
Çetiner said, “We increased the export that we started in 2010 to 200 thousand tons per year. Our goal is to increase this figure to 300 thousand in the next 4.5 years. We export as a high value-added product that we purchase from our factory. We have reached 60 countries with the United States of America, Russia, Europe, about 10 different countries in the African continent and Far East countries.
SALT EXPORT TO MORE THAN 60 COUNTRIES
Explaining that they export to businesses in the detergent industry as well as the food industry, Çetiner said, “At first we were offering salt for the food market. We are the main supplier of many of the global companies in the market. Salt is currently used as a raw material for detergent all over the world. We send the salt we extract to the customers according to their demands”.
Expressing that there is tablet salt production all over the world to reduce the hardness of water, Çetiner said, “We have created our own brand. Tablet salt has many different uses. It is used in hotels and large estates to soften water. It is also used in households to remove traces of detergent in dishwashers.” .
Çetiner said, “Plastic and heavy metal pollution in the seas is at extreme levels. Salt from the seas is also exposed to pollution. Salt Lake is in the middle of Anatolia. Pollution in Tuz Gölü is below zero. We send it organically to many parts of the world.”
