While 98 million tons of citrus was produced in the world in the 2020/21 production season, there was a 5% increase in total citrus production compared to the previous season. Orange provided 51% of the total citrus production, while tangerines provided 34%, lemons 9% and grapefruit 7%. Compared to the previous season, the highest increase in production among citrus products was seen in orange, with a rate of 8%. In the same season, Brazil maintained its leadership in world orange production with a production share of 16.9 million tons, while Turkey took the eighth place by meeting 3% of the world orange production. Brazil also met 64% of the world’s orange juice production with 1 million 157 thousand tons of orange juice production in the 2020/21 production season, and 75% of the world’s orange juice exports with 1 million 80 thousand tons. While the most important countries in world orange exports were Egypt, South Africa and the USA, the leading countries in imports were the EU, Russia and Saudi Arabia.
According to TUIK data, citrus fruit production in Turkey is 4.3 million tons in 2020, with 36% tangerine, 31% orange, 27% lemon and 5% grapefruit. In the same season, Turkey’s orange production decreased by 22% compared to the previous season and was realized as 1.3 million tons. With a 25% decrease compared to 2019, the highest decrease was seen in Washington type oranges. According to TUIK data; While the per capita consumption of oranges was 12.3 kg in the 2019/2020 season, it was observed that the consumption decreased by 9% compared to the previous season.
Orange mass fruit orchard area; In 2020, it is 460 thousand decares; Antalya (29%), Adana (22%) and Hatay (16%) are the important provinces, respectively. According to TUIK data, when the last five-year course of the number of trees is examined, there is an 11% decrease in the number of trees bearing fruit (12.3 million units) in 2020 compared to 2016, while the number of trees that do not bear fruit (1 million 52 thousand units) is 50% compared to the same year. rate increased. Orange production; While 1.3 million tons of oranges are produced in Turkey in 2020, 70% of the production belongs to Washington, 4% to Jaffa and 26% to other orange varieties. While 85% of the production was met from the Mediterranean and 15% from the Aegean Region, from the point of view of the provinces, Antalya, Adana, Mersin, Muğla and Hatay met 95% of the production. According to the 1st estimation of TUIK herbal production, citrus production in Turkey is expected to be 5.3 million tons in 2021, while orange production is expected to be 1 million 850 thousand tons with an increase of 38.7% compared to the previous year.
