Turkey’s cucumber and gherkin exports reached 77 million dollars at the end of 2017. With 62 million dollars of cucumber and gherkin exports, 80 percent of Turkey’s exports were realized by member companies of the Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association.
Turkish gherkins and cucumbers adorn the tables of the world, whet the appetite of the people of 88 countries. 75 thousand tons of 100 thousand tons of cucumbers and gherkins produced annually by Turkish farmers are exported to all over the world, especially the European Union.
An information meeting was held for cucumber and gherkin producers in Ödemiş, one of the most important cucumber and gherkin production centers in Turkey, in cooperation with the Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association, which realizes 80 percent of Turkey’s cucumber and gherkin exports, and İzmir Food, Agriculture and Livestock Directorate.
Murat Award, Vice Chairman of the Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association, stated that they attach great importance to the producers being aware of the current developments and sectoral regulations in the sector and consciously growing their products.
83 percent of cucumber and gherkin exports go to EU countries
Informing that 83 percent of the 77 million dollar cucumber and gherkin pickles exported in 2017 were exported to European Union countries, the award said, “We organize trainings so that our producers are instantly informed about the developments in the European Union legislation. Due to their cooperation with us in these trainings, İzmir Directorate of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. and Ödemiş District Directorate of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. Ödemiş District Director of Food, Agriculture and Livestock İbrahim Altıntaş stated that there is 100 thousand tons of cucumber and gherkin production in Turkey and 30 thousand tons of this is produced in Ödemiş, revealing the potential of the region.
Representatives of İzmir Directorate of Agriculture and Livestock informed the producers about not using drugs containing metalaxyl active substance used for downy mildew and alternative control methods.
Turkey exported cucumber and gherkin pickles to 88 countries
While Turkey exported cucumber and gherkin pickles worth 72 million 78 thousand dollars in 2016, it increased to 77 million 123 thousand dollars in 2017 with an increase of 7 percent. In 2017, Turkish cucumber and gherkin added flavor to the tables of 88 countries and whetted the appetite.
